UoA Mooting Society
How We Got Our Start
Established in 2013, a cohort of five enthusiastic law students at the University of Auckland recognized an opening for fellow students to enhance their involvement in one of the most vital abilities to acquire as aspiring lawyers: advocacy.
Today, in the year 2026, the University of Auckland Mooting Society has burgeoned into one of the most prominent organizations at Auckland Law School, hosting six highly regarded moots with the intention of facilitating and refining mooting and advocacy skills as well as multiple development and engagement events. The benefits of the society are abundant, encompassing opportunities to compete in international competitions, participate in seminars and networking events, and gain knowledge in areas of law that may not be covered in standard coursework.

Advocate
Advocacy is at the heart of what it means to moot. Historically, moots have focused on commercial law, but we believe it is critical for mooting problems to reflect the interests of Auckland Law School’s student body. Our newly introduced Social Issues moot aims to reach a wider audience by making the topic more accessible, and to improve our students’ knowledge of the issues we face today.

Engage
We aim to make mooting more accessible by offering development sessions and promoting diversity within the Law School's Society. Our ultimate goal is to democratize the process so that all law students can feel comfortable participating, including those who may not fit the typical mooter mold or those who are interested but unsure where to start.

Grow
Law students will encounter mooting during their studies. We aim to foster an inclusive culture by mentoring and coaching younger students through a coaching pipeline and 'Moot Camp' program, which helps all mooters grow from Junior Moot to Stout Shield competition level.
